From Sketch to Stage: How Designs Evolve at oodelooo Ballet Wear
Melissa DeLorenzoShare
When you’re both the designer and the maker, something magical happens — you have complete freedom to let your ideas evolve. What starts as a simple sketch on paper can take on a life of its own as it moves through the creative process. That’s exactly what happened with one of our newest looks that graced the runway in Japan this past March.
I always begin with a sketch. It's where I get to dream big — exploring silhouette, movement, and mood. This particular design started with an idea rooted in classic ballet lines, but with a touch of bold drama. The sketch captured the essence of what I envisioned, but once I began bringing it to life with fabric in hand, things started to shift.
That’s the beauty of the process — you’re allowed to change your mind.
As I started selecting materials and fitting the garment, I realized certain elements needed adjusting. Maybe the trim I imagined didn’t drape the way I thought, or the original neckline needed a slight tweak for better movement. Sometimes, the fabric itself leads the way, showing me how it wants to fall or stretch.
The final result stayed true to the spirit of the sketch, but with subtle differences — differences that made the design stronger, more wearable, and more uniquely “oodelooo.”
This kind of freedom is something I treasure deeply. Unlike mass production or fast fashion, where the path from design to delivery is rigid and standardized, handmade fashion allows room for intuition, experimentation, and growth. Each piece becomes a reflection not just of the original idea, but of the journey it took to get there.
So next time you see a finished oodelooo piece, know that there’s a little story behind it — one of inspiration, trial and error, and the joy of transformation.
Because here, design isn’t just about drawing what you see in your mind. It’s about letting the piece become what it’s meant to be.
With love,
Melissa 🌸
